The Sound Box
-for Cherry Road
As a collective we were tasked with creating a sensory device for members of the Golden Group at the Cherry Road Resource Centre in Bonnyrigg. The Golden Group is made up of around 20 users who have disabilities such as Dementia and Alzheimer's and various learning difficulties. Carers work on a one-to-one basis and plan different activities, but through discussing their work we realised they wanted a way to bring the group together, allowing users to work together more.
Spending time with the Golden Group users we began to notice the important role nostalgic music played for the group. Although many of the users have problems with their short term memory, they remember a huge repertoire of songs, which they enjoy singing and dancing along to. We designed and made a physical interface for an interactive mp3 player which the service users could interact with in a tactile manner.
